Galanga is similar to ginger. I suppose someone may have already said this, as I'm posting this comment a long time after this chapter was posted.
At any rate, Ginger is a common alternative to use in Thai cooking if you can't find Galanga root. They do have a slightly different flavor.

Outstanding Story so far, I will definitely be printing this amazing story out later on so that I can add it to my fanfic book. I love how your having Snape help Harry defeat Moldieshorts(Voldemort) and warn Harry when he suspects something is wrong. Both The Refiners' Fire and The Time of Destiny are very awesome stories and I see why your on this webpage and why everybody I know says your such an awesome writer and I agree with them:):):):)

"...bottom of a jar of newt eyes, one pair of eyes was aware, and following his movements avidly."
I know how Harry feels. It's like that around here everyday at 4:10 when I feed the cats and dog.
I appreciate your replies, but they are not necessary. I'm reading a wonderful story and don't often know what to say, other than, "This is a wonderful story." I imagine it is tough to follow that.

Hey, it's my pleasure to thank you for taking the time to write me a note about your feelings about my story! So thanks for writing! And I know what you mean about feeding the cats and dog - I have the same thing here, as well as horses and goats who all think I should feed them whenever I come out of the house in the direction of the barn. And since I do give them cookies (animal treats), I suppose they're right!! heehee. My animals aren't spoiled or anything. . . . Glad you're enjoying the story!

Newt eyes, watching, watching.
Evil eyes, staring, staring.
Back turned, still there.
Creepy feeling, skin tingling.
Scary air about me, breathing, breathing.
*Bump*
Ooops. Bumped the shelf there, bumping, bumping.
Sorry, Professor, squishy, squishy.
No more eyes, staring, staring.
Goopy floor, messy, messy.
Moping, Moping.
Better.
*Sonicdale takes off his black beret and bows to the fingersnaps in the room*
Nice bit with Snape. Sorry about the All-Stars match, I was looking forward to that. :)
The Auror testing was good. I expected something strange to happen. Zabini is going to have to be squashed like the bug he is, soon.
Good work!

I probably should have reviewed after finishing RF, but I'm afraid I couldn't stop reading! I love this story, and I've been reading for about twelve hours straight so far this sitting! The only problem I've seen so far (it's always easier to see what you don't like than what you do, isn't it? Just take it as given that everything else rocks!!! More than WS!!!) is that I just can't see Harry calling his girlfriend "baby." Just doesn't seem natural to me; he strikes me as more of the name or sweetheart kind of guy. Or maybe I'm just seeing myself in him, who knows?
And, just thought you might like to know in case you didn't (I couldn't tell if your explanation was brief because of lack of knowledge or lack of interest in spreading your knowledge - and, yes, this is what prompted me to review this chapter specifically) that galangal is similar to ginger - often referred to as "Thai ginger," actually. It tastes sort of like mild ginger with a hint of lemongrass, and makes a great addition to many Asian-style foods, Thai or not. Plus I'd never substitute ginger for it in tom yum koong or chicken and galangal soup. Sorry, the chef in me comes out.

wow. all that was super clever, super sneaky, and SO snape in every way. loved that. (so cool so cool so cool) I would have tried for an O too. Might as well, eh? Or I would have wrote some HP fanfic, but wait, I wouldn't need to would I? Great chappie.

I am in soooooooo much trouble. For the past week I have been glued to the computer trying to read as much as I can. I had huge headaches, had some aspirin and on with the stories.
I finished Refiner's Fire in about 4 to 5 days (having to work and go to school) and started straight into Time of Destiny. I NEED TO STOP!!! I have a research paper due on Monday and it's not looking very good for me.
I apologize for not reviewing sooner but I just couldn't stop reading.
Both stories are compelling and engaging. To be honest, right now I am afraid to go on reading. I just know you are brewing something horrible that will alter my heart beat and raise my blood pressure.:)
I came to this site by Kokopelli's recommendation (Live Journal) and I have been reading the stories as if my life depended on it. For some reason, (I do not like computers very much, and know enough of them to do the basics) my computer will not allow me to log into some authors; so I have given up and resigned myself to not being able to finish them. However I have enjoyed your stories so much, I've dragged my daughter into them and I think it was not a good thing to do. She has kids and a husband, (ja, ja I don't) and what she has read, she has enjoyed. So here you have two more fans to follow your stories.
I especially enjoyed the Auror's interview and Snape going bact to being his detestable self, even if only for the sake of appearances.
Keep those chapters coming in. Let's so for how long I'll be able to go without falling into the temptation to continue reading. I do need to finish my school work, and this semester is almost over. YAY!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing your talent and keep it up.
Best Regards, AnnieBee/Nana

Interesting Auror exam and I like the fact that unlike HBP (ugh!) Snape really is a ggod guy.
P.S. You've got great betas, I'm great for spelling and grammar, which means I'm more an editor than a beta. I like how you thoughtfully thank them at the end of each chapter.

O.O
AWESOME! I've just spent the better part of a week reading 'Refiners Fire' as well as this story, and I must admit that you are a VERY talanted writer. BTW, I did read the story in which you are a potion ingredient ^.^ It was rather amusing to see!
I like the fact that you have actually managed to make snape out to be a (relativly) resonable man, it's always interesting to see people change what seems to be a basic conflict in personalities, but at least yours a possible change rather than the extreame alteration of behavior that some have.
Keep Up the Excellent work!
PS. are you Open to challenges? Because I have a premise for a Post HBP story that I'd really like to see used.

I made the comment not because of HBP (since this story ignores it) but because of the sheer lack of students in the NEWT Potions class. Being in the top ten of forty students is one thing; however, when the class is only ten students, being tenth is a different kettle of fish. Also, this is a *Severus Snape* NEWT Potions class! At the most, a mere *three* Gryffindors are even in it (Harry, Hermione, and Ron). There would be two Ravenclaw (*Tough* Terry Boot and Padma Patil), at most, *one* Hufflepuff (Susan Bones), and the rest made up of Slytherins. Among the Lions, Hermione is the best in Potions, followed by Harry and Ron; also, Hermione is easily the best at Potions among all the Hogwarts students of that year. With that said, who is better than Harry among the remainder of the students? The closest approach is among Daphne Greengrass and Blaise Zabini (both of whom are Slytherins in Harry's year), and I am willing to concede that *both* may be better in Potions than Harry; however, everyone else trails Harry in Potions, ranging from close (the Ravenclaws) to far to the rear (Ron and Draco Malfoy).

Apparently, Somebody is not Sure about Severus. Why else would he be forced to punish a student who is, to Harry's own amazement, in at least the top five in NEWT Potions, if not the top two?
